Details

Old Forest School was built in the early 1930’s to serve as a school, gathering place and hub for a small (but thriving) rural community in Pongakawa. Like many historic New Zealand properties time had taken its toll. The buildings and property had lost some of their former luster.

Enter the McMahon family with a thirst for hard work and a vision to restore a historic property. Fast forward through six years of hard kiwi slog and determination and this collection of beautiful buildings have been restored to their former glory. Particular attention has been paid to ensure the property retained its’ unique character and schoolhouse charm.

In the summer of 2013 Old Forest School opened as a wedding venue.

There’s an abundance of special spots for couples to say “I do”. You can take your pick from the original and authentic schoolhouse or under the enormous trees (planted on a series of school arbour days 80 years ago). While the bridal party pose for photos in many of the idyllic  locations, guests can enjoy a range of activities. The original tennis court, pétanque, croquet, cricket and lots of old school court games.

When you’re ready to party the Redwood Stables are the perfect location for a unique, relaxed, rustic reception. The perfect mixture of old school charm, rustic props, festoon lights, long trestle tables and a collection of vintage chairs. A wedding venue that will make sure your celebration is one your friends and family will never forget.

Old Forest School has 3 acres of prettiness and privacy, so there’s plenty of room to add your own special touches to your day.

There’s some accommodation on site with a delightful collection of historic forestry cabins. The bridal party or guests can spend the night in the cabins and enjoy a big breakfast together in the morning. There’s lots of other accommodation options nearby too.

Old Forest School is conveniently located in the heart of the Bay of Plenty. An idyllic, historic, unique wedding venue a pleasant 45 minute drive from Tauranga, Rotorua and Whakatane.

We married here in May 2014, the McMahon family were amazing, super helpful in making sure our day was Perfect for us, little miss rose is an aspiring photographer and did some of our photos and did an amazing job.. Su-an and Alister were always at hand, they helped us find appropriate vendors for food, flowers, bus company’s and accomodation. this place is so tranquil, you feel like fairies and knowers are going to run out and great you any minute, as you walk thru this venue..there are great touches like “love-lock lane, where we left our lock. Accomodation was good, we stayed on sight which was great for winding down and being with close family in the morning. However there is limited accomodation. Truly breath taking venue.
